Pooh Bear's Garden

While at home for our family cookout on Saturday, I took a walk through my mom's garden. Note: a few years ago, my sisters and I discovered that our grandmother called her "Pooh Bear" as a child. We have since adopted the nickname as well, hence the title of this post.

Anyway, back to the garden. Despite the recent heat wave in Georgia, Pooh's flowers were blooming in full swing and the colors couldn't have been more vivid. Admittedly I'm still (slowly) learning the ins and outs of my camera, but I got some beautiful shots with my 50mm lens. Not surprisingly, still flowers are much easier to capture than a wild little baby (however, I definitely got some good ones of my niece that night as well).

Five things

It seems the peaches I bought yesterday ripened perfectly overnight. When I walked into the kitchen this morning, I was greeted by the loveliest, peachiest smell. Surely this sweet peach and crème fraîche pie I'm making today will be perfect for our family cookout. Here are a few other things currently making me happy.

Happy (Long) Weekend

Memorial Weekend is here! There are few things better in the real world than an extended weekend. To celebrate the holiday and official start to the summer, I'll be found at the pool, a family cookout, the lake, and most likely the pool again. Here's to hoping your holiday weekend is filled with lots of this:

and lots of these:

Happy Memorial Day!

Cinnamon Apple Muffins

On Sunday night around 10:30, apple muffins just seemed like a good idea. I quickly googled "cinnamon apple muffins" and found the first recipe where I had all the ingredients on hand -  and it didn't hurt that they were topped with a buttery cinnamon-sugar glaze. I used this recipe and did half regular and half gluten-free for my roommate (we have a pretty sweet deal if you ask me where I cook and she cleans). While they can't compare to my mom's apple muffins (I'll get that recipe for next time before she's asleep for the night), they were perfect for a late night Sunday snack I didn't need. I guess that's how it goes!

Five things

{Table setting for Sunday's pizza party}

There was a common theme to my weekend: good food, lovely weather and great friends. It started off with cooking dinner for a friend and my roommate on Thursday night, Antico pizza on Friday with friends I don't get to see often, a pig BBQ on Saturday, a homemade pizza lunch for my sister and her little family on Sunday after church and ended with baking apple muffins with my roommate at 10:30pm (smart). And throughout all, it was sunny and warm enough for summer clothes but cool enough for a few good runs. Hooray for starting the week off right!

{Pretty candlesticks from Anthropologie - on sale, too!}

Oatmeal Dark Chocolate Chip Cookies

I'm finally settled into the new apartment and what better way to celebrate than to make cookies! I tried this recipe but increased the flour by a smidgen (~2 T) because the dough was very sticky when following the recipe exactly. I also used dark chocolate chips because, you know, they're healthier. These cookies definitely can't compete with these cookies, but all in all they turned out well and were definitely soft and chewy (win).

{Side note: had to buy this at Star Provisions, obviously}

Five things: new apartment edition

{Dainty little teacup sitting in my window sill}

After a weekend of moving in less than favorable rainy conditions, it's the little things that keep me excited about unpacking, organizing and then unpacking some more. While there's still a lot to do, my roommate and I at least got all the painting done before moving in our things. Stay tuned over the next few weeks as I'm hoping to have lots to share as we get settled in and start decorating!

Color War

I've decided to paint my bedroom in the new apartment but am having the hardest time picking a color (not all too surprisingly if I do say so myself). While many accents in my bedroom fall into the blue category, I have a deeply-rooted love for the color gray. Naturally to make my decision, I consulted all my favorite design blogs and anywhere else I could find inspiration. Here are some of the rooms that are currently inspiring me.

Five things

{Palm tree perspective on the way to Culver City}

After a busy week in LA, it was nice to have a somewhat relaxing weekend at home. On Saturday, my friend graduated from pharmacy school so I made the trek to Athens to celebrate. The lovely weather made for a perfect visit to Taqueria del Sol post-graduation and, later, an impromptu tacos and sangria party in celebration of Cinco de Mayo back in Atlanta.

Good Food: Los Angeles

{Pepperoni & "Big Sur" pizzas}

While in LA training for my new job this week, my free time was limited to after work activities. For someone who loves to eat and shop, you'll hear no complaints from me because that is just what I did. I was lucky to catch up with two friends who moved out to LA two years ago and my cousin whom I haven't seen in six years. My friends introduced me to Pitfire Pizza in Culver City where we enjoyed delicious wood-fired pizza and seasonal sangria (ok, they had beer and I had sangria) while my cousin took me to Cha Cha Chicken in Santa Monica for incredible Jamaican cuisine and homemade ginger ale (he's not quite 21). It was a short trip, but by the pictures alone I am sure it's obvious that it was successful. Here's to hoping I get some good Mexican today in celebration of Cinco de Mayo!

{Chicken croquette appetizers}

{Homemade ginger ale with mint & orange}

{Coconut fried chicken (incredible) & spicy Cuban fries}

{Ropa vieja (even more incredible than the coconut fried chicken) & the best fried plantains I've had}
