Baby Birthday

My niece's birthday party was a swirl of colorful tutus, pink cupcakes and new friends. She loved her banana cake, as evident in the photos below, and we all loved gathering together to celebrate her special day. Here are a few photos I snapped throughout the party via Instagram.

Amira turns 1

Although I can hardly believe it, my sweet niece is turning one this week. Her actual birthday is on the 26th, but we'll be celebrating on the 28th with a quintessential first birthday party. Of course that means a smash cake for the little one is in order, which I've been commissioned to make. I'm thinking this banana cake with a light, whipped strawberry cheesecake icing will be perfect.

Happy (almost) birthday, Amira!

(P.S. I designed the invitation based on the colors of the birthday tutu Amira will be wearing.)

DIY: Centerpiece, Part 1: Candles

I'm currently working on a version of this to fill the centerpiece void we're experiencing over here on our dining room table right now, but I wasn't sure what I would put on the tray once complete. When I found some old jar candles in my sister's garage this weekend, I knew they would be the perfect addition. The project was simple and only took 15 minutes; I painted a stripe of gold in varying thicknesses on each of the five jars to give them a little sparkle (and to match the tray). I first contemplated stripes, but thought that might compete too much with the tray pattern. Stay tuned for part two later this week!

DIY: Placemats

I've been looking for new placemats for a while now, but have been very Goldilocks about every option I come across ("these are too uncomfortable on my elbows (which shouldn't be on the table anyway, oops)," "those are too big," "these ones aren't the right color"). Meanwhile, the leftover fabric from our bench cushion sat idly by in a window sill. Now that I finally have a sewing machine, I decided to put said fabric to use and make six placemats to match the cushion cover. They didn't take too long to make and in total cost less than $10. Now I just need a permanent centerpiece for our table...

White Chocolate Mint Cookies

For Christmas this past year, I baked a few batches of my go-to chocolate chip cookies for my family and a few friends. While I've made many variations* of these cookies, this combination was by far the best. The recipe calls for vanilla pudding mix (which makes the cookies extra soft), but I always test different flavors - so far my favorites are white chocolate and cheesecake. For these cookies, I used white chocolate pudding, chocolate chips and Hershey's Candy Cane Kisses. They were perfect for the holidays but even more perfect when I found the Kisses for $1/bag at the store this week.

*Other variations include cheesecake pudding with white chocolate chips and dried cranberries, chocolate pudding with peanut butter chips and white chocolate pudding with chocolate chips and M&M's. Next up, I would love to try some sort of coffee or caramel pudding (if either exists) with Heath bar.

A Happy New Year

2011 was filled with a lot of blessings but also a great loss. Today I'm feeling especially thankful for the health and safety of all my loved ones, two legs that get me through many long runs, a job I love and a heavenly father that loves me dearly. Admittedly, new years resolutions are generally not my forte, but looking back on this past year I'm feeling especially inspired to take on some big goals. Consider it a refresh of sorts - including this blog and my Etsy shop. May this year be filled with love, health, lots of crafting and many more blessings. Stay tuned, friends, and happy new year!
